The Doctor leaves Gallifrey to see the universe, to make a difference. As he travels, he grows pessimistic, wonder fading into cynicism as he witnesses oppression and violence. After leaving Susan on a wartorn Earth and returning his first companions home, he decides it's time to do something about it. It becomes obvious that people can't be trusted to run their own worlds, so he decides to do it for them. Eventually he spills blood for his cause. It becomes easier with time; he knows it's for the best, that these deaths will not be in vain. He has long come to accept that sometimes, there is no other way.
By his Fifth incarnation he has enslaved a number of worlds, leaving former companions to oversee them in his absence. His name is equally venerated and feared, adored and despised. He has become ruthless, callous, obsessed with his vision of the universe.
He cannot afford to regret. He cannot afford to grieve. There is no room for mercy, for remorse, for love. He is the healer of the cosmos, and nothing else matters.
The Doctor and his show are owned by the BBC, and I'm sure they'd be appalled to see what I've done to him. No copyright infringement is intended, no money is being made. This is all in fun, and meant purely as harmless fiction.
